Storing a family’s toothbrushes: easy to identify, reach and dry

A tidy sink is useful, but identification and space to dry matter too. Give each person a place and keep checking the brush and its holder.

Start with whose brush it is

Give each person a consistent position. Different colours or a label on the holder can help; keep any labels away from bristles. FOI’s wide-head brush comes in Champagne Gold and Flame Red, while the triple-sided brush comes in red, deep blue and white. A shared colour still needs a separate place. Do not share brushes.

Leave room to dry

ADA care guidance recommends rinsing after use, storing upright and allowing air drying, rather than routinely enclosing a damp brush. It also recommends replacement roughly every three to four months, or earlier when bristles are worn. Read the ADA toothbrush guidance.

When choosing a holder, check whether heads crowd together, water collects below or the brush catches as you lift it out. A long or wide head may need more clearance than a compact one.

Plan for adults and children separately

FOI’s children’s brush has a suction base for standing on a suitable surface. Clean the base and check stability; the feature does not keep the brush or counter clean by itself. Position it with adult-assisted brushing in mind. Read the parent’s guide.

Make checks part of the routine

Note when a new brush is first used, and look at the bristles while rinsing it. Follow any product-specific directions as well as general care advice.

  • After brushing, rinse away residue and leave the brush to dry.
  • When tidying, check the cup or holder for collected water and dirt.
  • When replacing, reconsider whether the head still suits you.
