Helping a child aged 1–6 brush: choosing, using and storing a toothbrush

The age label, petal-shaped guard and suction base have different roles. A child-sized brush still needs adult help, and toothpaste must be chosen separately for the child.

Holding a brush is only the beginning

Letting a child take part can help build a familiar routine. An adult can then help reach missed areas and finish the task; independent brushing does not have to be the immediate goal.

NHS advice includes an age-appropriate small, soft brush and twice-daily brushing for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, with adult help or supervision. Use a smear under age three and a pea-sized amount at ages three to six, checking fluoride concentration and individual advice with the pack and dentist. Read the NHS guide to children’s teeth.

The details of FOI’s children’s brush

FOI’s Children’s Ultra-Soft Toothbrush is labelled for ages 1–6. Its listed dimensions are 12.5 cm overall and a 1.5 cm head, with a PP + TPE handle, PBT soft bristles and a nominal filament diameter of 0.065 mm. The yellow and mint-green design includes a petal-shaped guard and a suction base.

The age range is a starting point. Check that the head fits comfortably and that the handle is manageable when an adult helps. View the children’s toothbrush.

Understand the guard and base

The guard is a structural feature; it does not replace supervision or guarantee protection in every situation. Keep brushing in one settled place, rather than treating the brush as a toy to carry around in the mouth.

The suction base helps the brush stand. It still needs cleaning and drying along with the head and handle. Before use, check the guard, head and base for loose or damaged parts.

Keep the routine clear

  • An adult prepares the brush and suitable toothpaste, and checks their condition.
  • The child participates while an adult helps complete cleaning in a familiar order.
  • Rinse the brush and tidy the sink together afterwards.

The toothbrush’s age label does not make other adult products suitable for the same child. Check toothpaste age guidance, fluoride content and directions separately. Ask a dentist about persistent pain or bleeding.
